★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We took the grandkids to Birdlings Flat to get some nice flat stones for painting. We had a great day, but the highlight was a visit to the museum. The collection of fossils, gemstones and other treasures is mind blowing. I could not believe the extensive collection with a huge selection of Kiwi and overseas artifacts. If you want a great place to go to, this is it! Over fifty years of collecting and the objects on display in the building and the garden date back millions of years. A marvelous and interesting exhibit, well worth a visit, especially if you're into stones and fossils, and the great thing is... it's free! Be aware, there are no public toilets and there are some polished gemstones to buy, if you want, but no pressure. Take a few dollars, and before you go, make sure you have BEEN. The nearest public toilets are at the playground at the other end of the village!
The museum is thoroughly recommended and well worth a visit. Our grandkids were fascinated. We followed up with a fossick along the wild beach, where a lot of the local gemstones, especially agate, were found. The beach has dumping waves and severe undertow, so stay out of the water!
