β β β β β These guys were a hoot! Clearly they embrace the Barrier lifestyle and its characterful good humour. We were well looked after - and would definitely use them again!

β β β β β Don't use this company - use any other car rental on barrier. Neal the owner (who has reviewed himself below) launched a tirade of abuse at my wife over the phone without letting her get a word in, even after she said we would pay the penalty fee they never told us about. Save yourself the trouble and use anyone else.

β β β β β Between May 10, 2019 and May 12, 2019, we hired a Toyota Rav4 (2000-2003, Licence EZG919) from Airport Rentals.
During the first night, en route to stargazing, I backed into a tree at low speed. The spare tire in the rear saved all the metal parts, but the rear glass panel completely shattered when the metal panel bent and recovered.
Very soon after we left the island, we were slapped with a $1320 repair bill without explanation on what actual repairs were performed.
A month later, in early June, they followed up with another email saying something like "We forgot to charge you GST. Here's the bill for another $200."
From begin to finish, no detailed repair bill was provided to us. And based on my assessment of my damage, I am beyond appalled.
I can understand if parts get more expensive due to the island's location, but when compared to what's available in Auckland, I cannot understand the sheer, $800+, markup for
one.

The broader picture:
At present, no better insurance plans are offered prior to renting. Be extra careful when driving their cars.

β β β β β WARNING! DO NOT USE this company. Would rate it zero stars if it were possible... Terrible customer service even from the owner (see Dan Burger's review below as it sums it up perfectly).
We hired two cars, the blue car was to be returned on Monday and the white one the day after on Tuesday. The white one was faulty and the engine stopped working three times mid-driving so I called the booking agent who gave us the ok to swap over the return dates so we could return the white faulty car on Monday instead.... I was then accosted over the phone by their staff member.
When I tried to complain about the phone call I ended up getting further vitriol from the OWNER Neal.
I'm truly shocked - Neither of them listened at all, or provided an opportunity to explain, just berated me after having only half the story - all of this after supplying us with a faulty vehicle no less.
We had an amazing long weekend on the island, to end in such a sour way is not only a shame but literally the worst customer service I've ever encountered

β β β β β Neal was extremely helpful. Our flight was delayed, and the airport was closed when we arrived. Neal met us at the airport and passed on a message to our accommodation.
Great customer service and the most reasonably priced we could find. We would recommend Airport rentals for value and service. The vehicle was clean and tidy, and just what we'd asked for.

β β β β β Was going to hire a car through this company but overheard the abuse he was giving a couple of customers and decided to go somewhere else. Unbelievably BAD customer service by the guy (Neil?). AVOID!

β β β β β Great service from Airport Rentals, good communication, smooth and minimal fuss getting from the plane and on the road, and a good condition vehicle. They even sent my hat back in the post after I left it in the car! Don't hesitate to visit Great Barrier Island!

β β β β β - Fuel gauage was faulty (always showing completely full). When we filled the tank, it took about 40L for approximately 150-200km of driving. Even taking in to consideration the terrain we drove on, this is still significantly higher than similar cars so safe to say the fuel tank was NOT full when we picked it up.
- Handbrake was very loose.
Raised issues with the owner when we returned the car. Were met with abuse, similar to what has been described by other reviewers. When I asked to see odo readings or evidence of their last refuelling, they became particularly heated. Apparantely he "does not even need to rent these cars" so I would reccomend you book with someone else.
