About Architecture Smith + Scully
Hilary Scully graduated from Auckland University, School of Architecture in 1987. Before launching a practice with Carolyn in 1996, she worked in both New Zealand, and in the UK for four years, specialising in residential and aged care projects.
Hilary has undertaken post graduate study at the University of North London obtaining the Royal Institue of British Architects qualification; RIBA. She is a graduate of the 2005 NZ Architecture Masterclass run by the Architecture Foundation of Australia. She and Carolyn were finalists for the 2014 Architecture + Women NZ Munro Diversity Award.
Hilary has completed several renovations and a new home for her own family in Kingsland and Sandringham, combining her skills with her husband’s – a respected Auckland builder – to create environments suitable for them and that of their three children. Her home in Kingsland won an NZIA Residential New Home Award, a New Kitchen Award, was short-listed for Home of the Year, finalist in the Resene Interior and Exterior colour awards and was featured in Architecture NZ and Your Home & Garden magazines.
Hilary has a keen eye for detail and is a skillful space planner. These skills are particularly valuable to clients in their residential projects but additionally have cleverly transformed commercial spaces creating drama and intrigue resulting in both retail and interior design awards. She has a special interest in providing quality environments for our elderly and has experience working with LifeMark design standards.
A self-confessed “foodie”, Hilary enjoys keeping up with the latest eating establishments, which informs the many parts of the design of our residential and hospitality work.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We really enjoyed every aspect of working with Smith and Scully on the brief, design and build of our new house. Their empathy and ability to help us articulate all of our requirements during the briefing process meant that we had only one minor change to the initial design. Hilary and Carolyn’s directional aesthetic has resulted in a house that looks as contemporary now as it did when we moved in nine years ago. We entrusted the project management of the build to them which ensured continuity of vision and practical refinements that made the house perfect for us. The concrete, high ceilings, rich wood and energy-efficient technology has created a robust, adaptable home for our changing family needs, with the family having evolved from 6 years old boys into 2 quite different teenagers and the flow between the house and the three outdoor areas leaves us spoilt for choice when Summer rolls around.
Our focus was to create a home that was filled with love and peace. Smith and Scully’s ability to translate that brief into a welcoming house that flows easily between spaces for family, work, contemplation and the outdoors has created a home that exceeds our expectations in every way.

MOEC Motutapucamp on Google
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The Motutapu Outdoor Education Trust has used the services of Architecture Smith & Scully for 10 years including three new builds & two substantial alterations. The camp on Motutapu Island, Hauraki Gulf, Auckland is a listed historic site which requires all work to be sympathetic with the existing predominantly 1930's buildings. Architecture Smith & Scully have taken our complex (not always well resolved) briefs and turned them into a reality by asking the right questions, applying innovative thinking and delivering a result that exceeded our expectations. Budgets are always tight and we require 'no surprises" in all projects. The precise and well considered designs & details allowed accurate pricing delivering projects on budget without any complications. We look forward to working with them again.
