My working career has always been in the field of education. Initially as a primary school teacher followed by a transfer into secondary teaching. English and Drama were my specialist teaching areas to students aged 13 – 18. However I soon developed a passion for students, of above average ability, who struggled with mainstream curriculum delivery due to individual learning styles or specific learning needs. This lead to further study and an up-grade in my professional qualifications. I have been fortunate to have lived in 3 different countries, Papua New Guinea, Tonga and USA. These experiences lead to teaching opportunities along with first hand observations of the challenges faced in second language acquisition. I have been the Head of ESOL departments in two secondary schools, a wonderful time where I learnt a great deal about international and local students wanting to enhance their English language ability. My last employment was in an Auckland secondary school where I held the ‘Director of International Education’ position for a number of years. Here I worked with agents and students from all around the world. A truly stimulating and exciting position to have held. I now look forward to working at Bay Learning Academy, Mt Maunganui, as the new marketing manager and making my home with my family in the beautiful Bay of Plenty.

β β β β β My advice for this school is to try just one week first before to enroll more.Try different courses, please do it ! If your are looking for a good balance between listing/speaking/grammar/writting and with a native teacher maybe the best option is to take a course face to face. They do not give homeworks and you can not have acces to your test ( that evaluate your English level) before and after...I did not why they do not want to show the test. To all parents, please pay attention to the host family, ask them if they receive enough food, free and unlimited wifi, that the home is warm enough for them ( especially in winter) and also that they are free to have the key (I met a student who could not stay in the home when the family were not here). For the kiwi families who want to apply to be a host family in this school please make sure you sign a contract and that they pay you in right time.I know they are busy and they do their best, I wish they will improve some ways like administrative things. For students who are looking activities in NZ and time to share and meet people, it is the right place.

The school is superbly located opposite a big shopping mall, which offers a great choice of cafes and shops, not to mention the wonderful surfing beach which is very close walking distance to the school.
A great bus service to Mount Maunganui, Papamoa and Tauranga CBD is ideally located right outside the school.
The Bay of Plenty and Mount Maunganui offers an endless choice of things to see and do whilst Bay Learning Academy will ensure you achieve your highest level English goal. Itβs the perfect package all rolled into ONE!
Liz and her team are wonderful. They have so much patience and are passionate about making sure that every student is well looked after in both their homestay accommodation and in the classroom. Teachers are wonderful and use modern teaching methods. Classes are small, which is ideal for efficient and productive teaching.
Bay Learning Academy is a great place to study. Bring your surfboard and come and join in the fun in Mount Maunganui. You will not regret it.

β β β β β I took the course in November and came back to take a TESOL course which is about teaching English. I've taught English for 3 years in Korea. And with this course, now I realize what I went wrong and what I have to do in my future. Teachers are so kind, nice and they always want to help us. I learned a lot while watching their classes, too. I'm so excited about how I'll change in the future.
