★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We drove from Dog Kennel Corner near Tekapo to Benmore Dam. An experience but not for the faint hearted. A long way, 4 wheel drive, beautiful views, no sign posts to help you and we went wrong way twice. Was great to get to Benmore. Toll gates at both ends of the road.

I went into it thinking "Oh great, this lake will be cool." But sadly, it twas not cool. The lake ended up making me quite wet and that made me uncomfortable. 0/10, 0 stars if I could rate that.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It was so horrible. I have a chronic fear of water and there was lots of water. Scary stuff. They should be more considerate of people with my problem; maybe a nice water free part of the lake? Thanks but no thanks for this traumatising ordeal.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Well worth a little detour. Kurow was the last comfort stop before the lakes and hydro stations and was well served with cafes, etc. A long biking trail left from there to the dams.
