About Bute Farm
John Campbell arrived in NZ in 1865. He had a short visit to Otago chasing gold but was not a miner. He then made a successful career as a seaman operating a coastal shipping business in Napier. In 1887 he retired from the sea and purchased a settlement block of 640 acres (200 ha) in the lower Manawatu.
