About Dr. Carmen Barnes
Our story
Based in Wellington, NZ our clinic was established in February 2020 and is led by Dr. Carmen Barnes, a US trained physician with over 10 years’ experience in general practice and Functional Medicine.
Dr. Barnes originally trained in the USA as a General Practitioner and has also completed a Fellowship degree in Functional & Integrative Medicine through A4M.
Dr. Barnes is certified to practice as a Doctor through the Medical Council of NZ general practice pathway. Dr. Barnes became interested in Functional Medicine after she completed her training in General Practice.
She has worked in many different clinical environments, including Accident & Emergency, Hospital and Clinic settings. She has undergone many training courses in Functional & Environmental Medicine. Her interests include autoimmune disease, IBS and women’s health.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Dr. Barnes is a highly educated and skilled physician! I owe her my life and only wish I had found her sooner in my health journey. I’ve never met a doctor who is continually expanding their knowledge base and adapting to emerging science and medicine and individual patient needs. You don’t get put into a category and on the same program as everyone else. I can bring up any idea I have normal or crazy and if she doesn’t already know about it she’ll research and get back to me with why I should or shouldn’t implement it. I know I haven’t been the easiest patient struggling with Lyme and mold and not only the physical symptoms but mental and emotional anxiety and depression and at times was so impatient with the speed of my progress and angry in my grief but Dr. Barnes is so patient and so compassionate and faithfully stuck with me and found the best treatment approach. I trust her completely. I wish more Lymies and moldies were able to see her! I had seen so many doctors before who told me nothing was wrong but Dr. Barnes listened and found the root causes of why I felt so awful and has fixed them! Listen to her. The sooner you listen to her the better. ?
Thank you, Dr. Barnes, for everything. You have taught me so much and given me my life back. You are such a gift to me and I’m sure all your patients.
On a practical note if you’re on a tighter budget she doesn’t overcharge and will always help you prioritize blood tests or supplements etc. She’s so reasonable, accessible and down to earth. She’s the best!

I have an auto-immune disease and was seeing both a naturopath and a GP to try and treat my disease, without success. Within 6 months I saw noticeable health improvement which I had been waiting for for years. I am very impressed with her scope of treatment and the exhaustive tests that she does in order to make a diagnosis and help recovery.
Would highly recommend and I found her on the recommendation of others as well.
