★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I'm not quite sure what this review should be about the car park or the glacier itself but when it comes to evaluating the experience with the glacier I should give only one star because it makes you really sad when you climb up that glacier and figure out how small it has become. Another downside of this place is that you have helicopters flying literally every minute. They are even worse than the sandflies. But the hike to the glacier is pretty nice though

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Parking lot gets pretty busy during the day. It’s not easy to find parking. There is a sign in the parking lot about thieves attracted to the stuff in your car. So they recommend locking the cars properly.
There are many hikes from here. We did the one to the glacier. It’s a 1.5 hours round trip. Medium difficulty. It can be really hot on a sunny summer day, so make sure to carry a hat and sunscreen.
On the way there are many waterfalls and then finally is the glacier. It’s small though still pretty. Enjoy.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Go there while you can! Sure some years ago the glacier has been bigger but its still a beautiful sight especially with all the small waterfalls coming down the mountain. And of course seeing all the snow on the mountaintops.
In a couple years it will probably be gone (it already looks like their prediction from 2010 how it might look like in 2100) ... So go there - its not a very hard walk (1,5h) maybe 2-3 if you take your time and do all walks.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Came here in the middle of September. Carpark was plentiful. Proper flushing toilets on site too.
Glacier itself was quite a disappointment. Have seen better glaciers in Canada! The walk itself is interesting and worth doing, just don't expect great things at the end of the walk. On the way, there's several signpost to tell you what you could have seen - a massive glacier one century ago. In comparison to today's size it's a peanut.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The road to the car park is sealed but there are many bumps so you must drive slowly. There are a lot of parking spaces available. There are clean toilets. From the car park you can access many walks including the Franz Josef glacier view point and the Peters Pool walk. Parking is free.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Park here to get to the shortest trail to the viewing spot to see the Franz Josef Glacier from the ground.
The parking is free, and usually not too crowded.
The hiking out to the base of the glacier takes 20 or 30 minutes, but the trail is easy to hike.
You can hike further from the viewing area to get a better view of the glacier, if you don’t mind tough hiking over rocks.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ You’ll get nice views of the glacier on a fine day, but the old (1.5hr) track was washed away by the river, which changed course a couple of years ago. The only easy access option is a 30 minute (return) walk, or there are a couple of advanced hikes which take 5-8 hours. This unfortunately means that if it’s cloudy you can’t get closer than around 3km without significant effort. The DOC website is up to date.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A nice, spacious car park—especially now when it’s not full of tourist buses!
Several trails start from here. The most famous is the short hike to the Franz Josef Glacier viewpoint (the rest of the walk is now closed), but you’ll also find trailheads for Douglas Walk (which goes to Peters Pool and the Robert’s Point Track) and the Te Ara A Waiau Walkway.
In the middle of the parking lot, check out Defiance Hut, “the earliest New Zealand high-level mountain hut still surviving.” It’s closed and locked, so you can’t go inside, but it’s still interesting to see this piece of history!
