Gannets didn't seem to care if we were there or not, strangely! We enjoyed seeing them, though - and we enjoyed the commentary from our guide from the overland company. A great day out.

What a fantastic part of the country to visit. Stayed at The Farm at Cape Kidnappers and visited the gannets as part of a farm tour. Wonderful.

a very nice place to visit. we were here in 2007, its very special. i loved it. The gannet colony at the stunning Cape Kidnappers / Te Kauwae-a-Māui certainly falls into the latter category. you can take a look here in many ways, walk or with a tractor or just like so many do with a mini van. These garrulous seabirds normally nest on islands, but since the 1870s, they have been called a spot at the towering cliffs "home" - from September to late April, before they head off for warmer climes. So if you want to see all 20,000 in one spot, the little gannets (ganettes? Just a thought ...) hatch in late November, so from then until February is the best time to catch their cry. Cape Kidnappers / Te Kauwae-a-Maui is a headland at the southeastern extremity of Hawke's Bay on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island and sits at the end of an 8-kilometer (5.0 mi) peninsula which protrudes into the Pacific Ocean. It is 20 kilometers (12 mi) south-east of the city of Napier. Access to the Cape by road stops at Clifton, which is the departure point for many tourists. The Cape Kidnappers Golf Course lies between the headland and the nearby coastal community of Te Awanga.

Nice experience to have when visiting Hawke’s Bay. The tour takes about 3 hours in total, 45 minutes to get to the colony and another 45 to return. During the way over there, a tour guide presents facts about the history of the reserve. The views from Cape Kidnappers are outstanding.

One of my favourite place in North Island to watch sunset and the Gannets make this place much more beautiful. Perfect creation.
