About Hawera Water Tower

The Hāwera Water Tower dominates the urban landscape and provides a central landmark and navigation point for visitors to the town. It is designated as a category one structure by the Historic Places Trust, and celebrated its 100th year in 2014.

Situated behind the South Taranaki i-SITE Visitor Centre, take about 10 minutes to climb the (somewhat strenuous - but don't let that put you off) 215 steps of the best known heritage building in Hāwera for a bird’s eye view of the region and coast.

The tower is open to climb daily (with the exception of Christmas Day) between 8.30am - 4.30pm on weekdays and 10am - 2.30pm on weekends and public holidays. Gain entry by heading into the South Taranaki i-SITE Visitor Centre which is located right beside the water tower, on High Street.

Entry Fee - Adults $2.50, Children $1.00, Family $6.00.

For more information contact the South Taranaki i-SITE Visitors Centre.

Even though it look a bit boring from the outside, once you make your way to the top of this tower, trust me, you get one of the best panoramic views of Taranaki district. There is a small fee to get up there but it's worth the money.

Always drove past but this time stopped. Appears closed but can get a key from info centre next door at $2.50 per person. Built in 1914 to provide water for fire brigade. Gothic style windows it is high but easy to climb although no handrails in some places. Compensation for the climb is the spectacular views at the top. Children love to throw paper darts from the top.

I found this tower to be industrial yet beautiful, its subtle ways of turning even concrete to a exquisite artwork is more than alluring. My favourite part was that every person who had been here had left their mark in the form of penmanship, some signatures date back to the later century and there were many declarions of love which set a very romantic ambience. I would recommend this quaint tower to anyone in the area.
