Most fun bridge and approach I have had the pleasure of dicovering. The feeling of impending doom as you approach from the east on a bicycle was top notch.

This local bridge is famously known as the "Bridge to nowhere" or the "Pukeko Bridge" because of its bright red legs. It was originally constructed for $2m and was built on top of the crest of a hill. Dirt was then excavated away underneath of it to allow a highway to pass. It was known as the "bridge to nowhere" because the original Hillcrest road serviced a remote block of land that was "locked in" and you could only get to it from this road. Under the "Resource Management Act" a road can not be removed when it is the only access. So a bridge was built that effectively went no where. It now provides access to around 14 sections. Other options were investigated, but building a bridge was the cheapest. The original road was known as a "paper road", and you needed a four wheel drive to access it. It is now tar sealed and suitable for cars. The bridge has a single lane, and while it was originally gated off you can now drive to and along it via Hillcrest Road (via Hatsfield Beach area, coming off either Old North Road or Hibiscus Coast Highway).

It's hard to get emotional about the Pukeko Legs Bridge on SH1. There is no viewing platform, bungee facility, toilet, dairy, souvenir seller, Lotto outlet, gas station, motel, pub, OPSM, Bunnings, KFC , or Supercheap built on it, so really..... it's just a damn bridge with legs that need a serious second coat of paint.

Wow its a great bridge. I drive under it everyday twice. Superb lines. And man it's high up. It's definitely worth a day trip out there to admire the view of the motorway. Seriously its a bridge, what more do you want me to say.
