So, 5 stars for the fact that it IS the actual location. It isn't too hard to find. There are etchings on actual Mount Victoria signs that point to where the location is. As with many LOTR locations you have to use your imagination a bit but it is totally it and you can certainly feel the vibe.

Hobbit’s Hideaway is the filming spot for a scene in the Lord if the Rings film where Frodo and Sam are leaving the Shire. This was a short walk from where I was staying so I decided to head there one morning. It was a lovely, quiet location in the forest and I enjoyed the serenity.

A nice walk for LOTR fans, with plates in the work benchs.. The sings guide you through Mt Victoria to the filming location, but this one is not marked (you must remember the movie scene).

Easy hike along the Southern Walkway to filming location for LotR, Fellowship of the Ring. Spot where Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin hide from a ringwraith in the hollow under a tree root. A standard stop on the tours, but easy to find on your own. There are a few signs to the track, but the hideaway itself isn't marked. Look for a slight ledge just below the path. Hint: the tree itself isn't there; that was CGI.

We had a really nice walk there but there was nothing special about the hobbit’s hideaway point. I just felt that I had to see it as a fan of the Lord of the Rings.

Come and see another "walk-about" place where the first movie was filmed. If you have a tour guide with you, they will even point and show you pictures of where some of the lines took place on the film!

Don't hesitate to go here! If you are a fan of LOTR and you are visiting Wellington, you MUST GO here! Google map says the farther way to get here. Just go straight up to Pirie street and pass by kids' playground. Go up alongside the way then you will see. I was so lucky that I met tour groups and got commentary from an awesome guide although I was not in the tour group. It would be much better to search the 'get off the road' scenes before going.

Get off the road! Had fun finding this spot with the kids. They had no idea what was going on but the enjoyed playing about in the forest. Obviously there was a fair bit if set dressing on the day but with a pinch of imagination you can hear hoof beats as you huddle under the roots of the tree. Green spaces in cities are really important. They can really connect us back to the great outdoors and soak away the stress of day to day life. And this one is so accessible that I don't have to worry about taking the toddlers too far off the beaten track.
