About Holmes Architecture
With a family heritage in construction and as a qualified builder himself, Mike Holmes established Holmes Architecture as an architectural design practice, while completing the Masters of Architecture programme at Victoria University. Working on complex residential and commercial projects fostered an affinity with built form, and Holmes Architecture was initiated through connecting this intimate knowledge of the construction process with an intuition and passion for architecture and design.
Mike’s approach to the design process is fluid and intuitive, although his non-linear approach is always coupled with a strong sense of identity, purpose and process – “Establishing identity is fundamental to the creative process and establishing who you, and your clients are, will ensure a clear project vision.”
Identity may be communicated through architectural style, environmental considerations, materiality, detailing, form, landscape but developing well-defined geometries and tectonics in relation to the natural landscape is often a theme of the practice. Client and context is a conversation that is initiated early in every project, where the many competing forces of a design problem are reconciled through design thinking, visualisation and documentation.
Mike believes that architecture is communication in both practice and product – “The spark that delivers an initial design insight is a relatively brief moment in the process. The practise of architecture is then the communication of this brief and intense moment. What elevates buildings to architecture is when a designer has something worthwhile to say and does so in an insightful and honest way.”
Mike’s ultimate aim is that elegant, unexpected and delightful design solutions are achieved through balancing function, construction and efficiency with a deep empathy for site, context and client.

Mike listened to our ideas and presented a first draft plan to us that was exactly what we wanted.
The result was our home, which is a contemporary styled, visually appealing, sunfilled, easy care home that is a joy to return to.
One thing we liked was their real ability to listen. Our home reflects our ideas and our taste as well as showcasing Mike's skill around environmental, design, and insulation trends.
We found the experience relatively easy! Considering the complex nature of building your own home.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We had Mike and Lena design our first home build. We had been looking at kit set homes but couldn’t find any that suited our section that was extremely windy with a south facing view and the sun on the North side.
Mike came out and did a site visit, asked us what style we wanted, our rough build budget and how many bedrooms etc. Within a couple of weeks they had a concept design for us to see and it was everything we were looking for!
Holmes Architecture were very transparent with their payment schedule so we didn’t have any surprise invoices and we knew what to expect at each stage of the design process.
They got us over the line at a really busy time of the year for our building consent application with the Porirua City Council. They worked well communicating to our builders and their Knowledge of the house design and building code meant we were able to get our final CCC (Code of Compliance).
We would not hesitate to recommend Holmes Architecture or work with them again. They have designed our dream home and were professional, patient and friendly to us as first home builders. Thanks heaps, Mike & Lena!

Mike took our brief and turned it into our dream family home which worked out to be priced in our originally specified budget range. The cleverly designed spaces and architectural features he put into the plans makes our home something really special and we couldn't be more happy with it - each and every space is functional and well thought out. The whole concept and design phase was easy going and Mike was involved throughout the whole build with site visits and queries from contractors etc. We would highly recommend the team from Holmes Architecture, amazing result!

Holmes Architecture helped with our working plans and gaining consent with the council and we project managed the build with consulting help from Mike.
We are absolutely thrilled with the result. We have a lovely modern home that works well for every member of our family. The spaces are great. The exterior design is interesting. I really like Mike's easy going nature. He listened to what we wanted and was happy to incorporate our ideas into the project. He didn't take over.
I found the experience really good. I would definitely recommend Holmes Architecture to people who need original and interesting plans designed.
