About Huntley School, New Zealand
Huntley is New Zealand’s oldest and largest preparatory boarding school. Founded in 1896 under the joint Headmastership of Messrs Charles Mather and Basil Wilson, Huntley was originally established as a boys’ only school to prepare boys for entrance to Wanganui Collegiate School. In 1899, it was given the name Marton Preparatory School and in 1900 the school moved into the original two storeyed, wooden building on the present site.
Basil Wilson died in 1902 but Charles Mather continued as Headmaster, renaming the school Huntley School after his home in England, Huntley Hall. By the time he retired in 1919 the roll was in the 70’s and the original building had been greatly extended. The school continued to be owned by its successive Headmasters until a Trust Board was established in 1954 to purchase and run the school.
Huntley became co-educational in 2014. We knew there was demand for highβquality, independent co-education and no preparatory boarding school options for girls in the lower North Island. The change to coβed has meant our students grow and develop in a more natural environment, where they relate easily to both genders, just as they do in a family.

β β β β β Speaking as a student who went to this school and not a completely biased parent who doesnβt know the half of this I found this school to be an incredibly unenjoyable experience because the school focuses to much around sport and competition where the rest of the school suffer due to it, one example of this is unless you are an incredibly bad student you can get away with pretty much anything as long as you are in a school sports team (1sts or 2nds), that is just 1 point to why this school is bad and I could go on and on about the bad students, teachers and bias toward year 8s but I believe pointing then out in this way is as effective. I would also like to point out the low quality of the other reviews that fill this section, donβt be fooled by the few parents who have children that go there, considering they prolly didnβt get their children to help since writing βgoodβ is not exactly a skill testing task.
