My partner and I were seeking some travel vaccinations for our upcoming trip to South America. We were traveling through Invercargill for the day and decided to try our luck with a few google searches despite it being Saturday and many places were closed. I was surprised to find that the doctor picked up the phone and so I explained our situation—that we were passing by on our way to Dunedin and that if he was available and had the vaccines, we were after (yellow fever, typhoid, Hep A and Hep B) then perhaps we could come in for a consultation. He was initially friendly about checking his schedule to see if he could fit us in and also checking if he had two Yellow Fever vaccines and said he would call me back. He called me back about an hour and a half later and expressed that he did and seemed rather long-winded about providing us other vaccinations and medications we felt like we did not need/want as we have done prior research about what we want to get. I reiterated that both my partner and I needed just the four type of vaccines (so he need to have two sets of each) otherwise, it wouldn’t make sense for us to come in and then pay for another consultation elsewhere to get the others. He mentioned that Yellow fever and the others could not be given on the same day and that we could stay to get the Yellow fever that day and get the rest tomorrow however he soon mentioned that he only had one dose of Hep B but was still trying to convince us to come in for the Yellow fever one (We later learned that this is false and got ALL our vaccinations in a day at the Travel Doctor). After learning of this, I politely thanked him for his time and expressed (again) that we needed two sets and it wouldn’t make sense for us to come in. He then got rather aggressive on the phone and expressed that he drove 10 km to his office to check the vaccinations he had (didn’t seem like our issue that he wasn’t up to date with what his practice has) and proceeded to give me a lecture about not calling up in the future if I didn’t know what I wanted (I obviously did and expressed this many times) and then had the audacity to ask my for my credit card details to charge me for his time. Absolutely appalling—that just because he doesn’t have a receptionist to answer inquiries and that this is obviously part of the job description, that he got aggressive and completely unprofessional. AVOID!
