About John Miles Photography
Where have I sprung from?
I was born and brought up in the UK and I’ve loved photography since I was a 10 year old when I was given my first camera. With the arrival of digital technology my photography really took off. After 20 years in IT, I gave up the corporate world and made a major career switch to become a full-time professional photographer and built a very busy photographic business in Devon.
In 2012 I emigrated to New Zealand with my partner, Susan, ready for a new adventure. We settled near Napier in Hawke’s Bay on the East Coast of New Zealand’s North Island, an area famed for its hot summers and mild winters, sandy beaches and braided rivers.
At the end of 2017 my partner Susan and I purchased Portico Gallery and Picture Framing in Rotorua and we moved up to the Bay of Plenty. The gallery is run by Susan who is a picture framer and artist and once again, I’ll be enjoying creating a fun, full-time photographic business while also making the most of the wonderful lifestyle that The Bay of Plenty offers.
When I’m not working, I get out to explore our amazing New Zealand countryside; tramping, biking or camping in our small caravan. And of course, my camera goes with me – so many opportunities for awesome images literally on my doorstep.

When we returned for a visit last month with our little girl we made sure to book John in for a family lifestyle shoot. We were more than happy with the pictures - he is so unassumingly creative and just takes the most beautiful shots. We will definitely be back for more!
