Putāruru is located in the geographical center of the North Island of New Zealand, we are in the heart of the South Waikato.

The town of Putāruru got it's name from an historic māori event, it is said Kore kore a granddaughter of the founder of the Ngāti Raukawa iwi, Raukawa, had her life taken by her husband Parahore.

Kore Kore had a servant Ruru who was beleived to have witnessed the act and escaped into the forest where he hid and waited for Parahore and his men to stop looking for him.

The place where he exited the forest was named "Te Puta a Ruru" or "the exit of Ruru".

This was eventually shortened to Putāruru.

We are a small town home to  approximately 4280 people, being situated central in the North Island means it is a 45min-1hour car trip to bigger townships such as Hamilton, Tauranga, Te Awamutu, Taupo, Rotorua.

Putāruru is often recognised for the national and international production and exportation of Pump Water. This water is sourced from our local Te Waihou River, blue spring. 

The Spring feeds from the Mamaku Plateau where it is said to take 100 years for it to filter through, the result, crystal clear water with a blue hue of colour because of its purity and cleanliness.
