It all began over 30 years ago, when a young Richard Thompson started planting trees on a block of land bordering the Whanganui River. As the years passed, what was once a sparse collection of empty paddocks was now a densely populated forest of trees full of exotic timber. There was just one problem - it order to turn these trees into timber, it would need to be milled, and in order for the milled timber to be used, it would need to be dried.
So, a mill was purchased, a yard leased and the business that would become MacBlack, was born.

We've bought mac here for various projects around the garden, redwood for a beehive and also had beautiful large bookshelves made in E. regnans. Staff are knowledgeable and helpful. I appreciate that the timber is locally milled and that some of it is coming from the owner's own sustainably-managed forest block. Highly recommended. Great resource for locals but I understand they ship around NZ.

They really came through for us - it's so beautiful - well proportioned and made, using the wood colouring to it's full potential. Their customer service was also spot on - friendly clear communication, helpful and responsive to what we needed. We will be back :)
