About Maraenui Medical Centre
Maraenui Medical Centre was founded in 1961 by Dr. Keith McNaughton. In January 1995 Dr. Almarie Van der Walt started working with him. Her husband, Dr. Hannes Sohnge, joined later that same year. Dr. Bob Harris has been with the practice since 2002. Dr. Hettie Tremain joined in 2020 and Dr. Fiona Wylie in 2021.
Over the years, many staff members have been a part of the team for extended periods of time. All of these people have made huge contributions to the quality and community feel of Maraenui Medical Centre with their loyalty and commitment.
Ahuriri District Health succeeded in a Treaty claim on the Napier Hospital Site in 1998. With these funds, they completed a modern purpose-built medical centre out of which we now operate. This building was opened in January 2019.
Maraenui Medical Centre now has a staff of 20 who continue their commitment to the community of Maraenui which was started by Dr. McNaughton in 1961.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Disgusting staff member. Came in to sign up on a thursday and was told oh this could take long I dont know how long and are you able to go home and come back and sign your form after I'm done with it. Just too lazy and rude. I've signed up somewhere else anyway and they have lovely staff

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Fantastic. This is one of the last true family go practices around. You are a patient they value here, not just a number. A couple of the receptionists could do with communication upskilling or maybe a kiwi host course tho

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Wonderful doctors + nurses but one newish blonde receptionist is not great at all. I had an infection at bone level & doc wanted to check it out before sutures were removed, also had another thing to see him about. I turned up early as usual but that receptionist gave my appointment to a man who missed his appointment by 15 mins. Receptionist told me I would see the nurse instead. I waited 45 mins, couldn't wait any longer so I ended up going home & taking sutures out myself.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The staff at reception are the real heroes who keep everything running smoothly and everyone happy. They are true customer service gurus. I know they have to put up with some tough customers but they almost always have a smile on their faces and can bring one to yours too!
At $19 for a doctors visit it is well worth having moved to this practise. The new premises are modern and clean and spacious with the dispensary within the main building. Very happy with my doctor too.
