Lovely place. Accommodation is simple but generous and we'll configured for big groups. We got bad weather but lit the fire and still had loads of fun. Lovely outlook and close to amenities.

Had a fabulous stay at Marainanga at Anzac Weekend. Amazing hospitality. A huge paddock for our horses. Great trekking country. Thanks Ces & Matt

Excellent accommodation in a location off the beaten track. Don't let the long drive deter you, it is well worth the visit. Cec and Matt have put together a well-appointed, nicely restored shearers quarters with room for large groups. Even if you're unlucky to find the weather not so good when you arrive, the open fireplace makes easy work of warming up the large common areas. Recommended!

Stayed here with our large family group and everyone loved it! It's the perfect place for big groups as there is plenty of room for everyone to spread out and it's well appointed with everything you need. Matt and Cec are super nice and very accommodating and helpful. We loved that we could take our horses and ride over the station, which is epic to say the least. The river is really great for swimming, jet skis, kayaks, fishing and then the beach is really close by. Highly recommend!

A bit reluctant to write a raving review. You know what the Eagles sang in 'The Last Resort'; "you call some place paradise, kiss it goodbye". What an amazing place this is. It's located in the small beach front village of Ākitio. Your accommodation is a beautiful old sheep shearers accommodation with two lounges, complete kitchen, 9 bedrooms for 19 people. On a working farm and close to the beach. There are 2 kayaks, a BBQ on an extensive deck with a view of the river and a family size macrocarpa table, trampoline, some kids toys and then there are the many farm animals. And of course, last but not least Cec and Matt, really nice and helpful people. On the huge farm there are several walking tracks of which the Outback track (18km) is the most beautiful but also the most challenging. Make sure you have good walking shoes (really) and walking sticks may be a good idea too as they are farm tracks, not Doc tracks. The track offers amazing views over the coastline and ocean, as well as all the hills around you. It leads through stunning native forest (a great spot where the hosts can drop of a lunch of for you) where you'll see and hear tui's, kereru's, fantails, moreporks, New Zealand falcons and many other birds. Around the ponds you'll see frogs and paradise ducks and at the river (the River track is an easy 8 km return walk) we saw herons and royal spoonbills. The other tracks (6 in total) can be a bit challenging (steep) too but reward you with endless views (like the 8 km On top of the world track). The village, as said, is small, and has 30 inhabitants. It has a camping with a small shop, there is a boat club from where you can launch a boat, it has a 'Take away' that opens on certain days, and for the rest it offers a great beach from where you can fish with a reef for lobster and pāua and for the rest just silence. Not far from Ākitio is Waihi falls, a surprisingly nice waterfall and a great spot for a picnic. All in all a great place for a long weekend or full week with friends and/or family.
