★ ★ ★ ★ ★ New Zealand is dotted with Masonic lodges from the earlier part of the 20th century, when the Freemasons played a central role in politics and economics. Today the lodge at Kumeu has the tired look of many regional halls, yet they are an important record of New Zealand's past. The Kumeu lodge has a rendered brick facade facing the main road with two decorative and two small plain windows. The upper section of the decorative windows are in stained glass; the lower in opaque moulded glass. The windows are symmetrically placed either side of an projecting central chimney. The three other sides of the hall are in wood, which explains the need for a chimney in the facade. Worth a closer look if you are passing by.
