A small cemetery with a single stone memorial for the unmarked graves of pioneers, including little Core Essex Speedy, who died after eating poisonous berries on his father's property. There was no consecrated ground yet set aside and the small patch of land by the Mauku River became the first pioneer cemetery in the area. Major James Speedy, who owned the land that was set aside for the cemetery, is also buried there. The cemetery – also known as Lower Mauku Cemetery – stands on Glenbrook Road, 1 km south-west of its junction with Kingseat Road. There is a small turn off bay and parking for about 2 or 3 cars. Being a busy corner it is best approached from the Patumahoe side of Glenbrook Road, rather than the Glenbrook side. Slippery when wet, there is a narrow wooden bridge to take you across the sometimes swollen stream to the small piece of land where the cemetery sits with a white picket fence surround.
