Company History

With a passion for Heavy Transport Engineering and a vision to run a business doing what one loves - McCurdy Engineering was first established by Jim & Barbara McCurdy in their home garage on South Road, New Plymouth in 1961. In 1965 the company was officially formed and moved into a purpose built engineering workshop on Barrett Road, and in 1972 son Wayne McCurdy joined the team after qualifying as a fitter & turner.

The business continued to increase, as well as the range of work and services offered resulting in the move to the Devon Road premises in 1990. In the earlier days a lot of work was farm machinery and chassis alterations etc. The range of work became more diverse with many new and modern trucks coming into the market which required specialist support including computer laptop technicians and with the trucking industry having many more rules and regulations to adhere to.

In 2000 Paul McCurdy (Son of Wayne, Grandson of Jim) joined the company as an engineer after finishing an apprenticeship elsewhere, making it three generations of McCurdy Engineers.

In 2011 Wayne and Frances purchased another long-time established Taranaki automotive business – Moller Johnson. With Moller Johnson workshops in Hawera and Bell Block, the McCurdy Family now offered Taranaki wide coverage for the Heavy Transport industry.

McCurdy Engineering and Moller Johnson integrated to form one company in 2017, and rebranded as McCurdy Trucks.

In late 2019, with the continued growth of the company, McCurdy Trucks opened a purpose built Truck and Trailer repair facility with a specialist ten bay Service workshop along with an eight bay Engineering and Fabrication workshop at their upgraded premises at 72 Connett Road in New Plymouth.

The new facility has sped up repair times with three service lanes set up and the flow over the two pits and 1 lifter has improved booking wait times and customers can
plan their down time better while the 3T & 8T gantry cranes and large yard have made jobs easier, faster and safer.

The Parts Team now has a large warehouse to help house an increased range of parts to feed the workshops as well as the regions fleet workshops and outside customers.

Two electric vehicle chargers have been installed to service their electric truck customers. Access to the custom-built site is easy and yard room and parking is ample for any sized units.

McCurdy Trucks motto that is displayed to all staff and customers is “Trusted Commercial Vehicle Professionals Keeping Our Customers On The Road” and with the new facility this task has become a whole lot easier.

In 2022, McCurdy Trucks are a modern 4th generation company & are proud to have a fantastic team of over 55 staff, who have the same dedication and passion about the industry as our founder and pioneer of the business; Jim McCurdy.
