Located in a former farm supply depot the pub continues this fine tradition replenishing and refreshing locals and travellers alike. Merchant of Matamata proudly serves Good George craft beer and cider which is brewed locally in the region at their brewery in nearby Hamilton. Their brews are delivered fresh to the pub from the brewery and includes a range of enjoyable, easy to drink beers and ciders and a rotating range of interesting specialty brews.

Prompt service and relaxing atmosphere and kid friendly, most of all, our dogs are welcome in their outdoor seating area ... A must for our whanau.

In the end we got our own chair and also cutlery. The food also was average. Burger buns burnt on top. We are new locals and we're really looking forward to going to the Merchant but the total experience was at the best under par. We realize that their may have been extenuating circumstances and were infact informed prior to ordering that there would be no pizzas and the deserts had not set so we're also unavailable. We would like to visit The Merchant in the future but we're totally let down with a substandard experience last night. Please take our comments as constructive feedback.

Due to the Covid restrictions, the service didn’t allow our kids to use the crayons, making a bit hard to keep them quiet and behaved. Food took a little while, it was a bit packed, but came in great style, tasty and well served. Supporting the locals ;)

We both had the Fish & Chips and really enjoyed it. I washed mine down with the tap Pilsner. Perfect pairing as far as I was concerned! Add to this the brilliant table service, we were looked after from entry till leaving. Would definitely recommend.

My partner, a mate and I visited on the 2nd of January, not a particularly busy day. We ordered 3 simple burgers, nothing fancy as we were hungry and it was about 1:20pm. We did not receive our burgers until 2:30pm, we have this time down right as my partner took pictures of the food. 2. The burgers were outright bad, the beef patty inside was more like a giant overcooked meatball and hard to eat - not good at all. I told the waitress this and she seemed surprised. 3. On the positive the staff were friendly and the service was pretty good.
