★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Millers Flat Bridge is a NZ heritage-listed bridge opened to the public in 1899 after 2 years of construction period. It was designed by Dunedin based consulting engineer Robert Hay and constructed by J. and A. Anderson contractors of Christchurch. Considered a remarkable engineering feat at that time, the bridge crosses the Clutha River with a span of 176.2 meters consisting four high bowstring steel arch structures, each 4.9m long. The timber deck is 4.1m wide and the piers comprise of concrete-filled cast iron cylinders, driven down 9m into the riverbed. This bridge is still being used by the public as a single lane bridge.
