About Morag Stokes Art Studio
I am a Kapiti Coast based Scottish/Kiwi painter and art tutor. I began painting seriously 20 years ago, moving from a background in psychology, social work and management training to art, coinciding with my move to New Zealand.
Over this time, I gained an Advanced Diploma in Art and Creativity and certification from the USA based GOLDEN Artist Colors to work as a GOLDEN Artist Educator. I have recently relocated home and studio from Wellington, where I ran the popular Artist Sessions twice a week, to Waikanae on the Kapiti Coast. I have a lovely new studio and am establishing a programme of topic based workshops. Eventually I hope to resurrect the Artist Sessions as I get to know the local community. While in Wellington I worked as a tutor at Pablos Art Studios for seven years. During my time at Pablos, I ran weekly outreach art workshops at the Forensic Psychiatric Rehabilitation facility in Porirua. In addition, I make acrylic paint and product presentations for clubs, groups and organisations around NZ. My teaching and painting methods have been featured on NZTV and art magazines, and images of my work illustrate a series of 12 NZ Law text books.
The materiality of paint is at the heart of my work. This has resulted in four very different processes which dominate my creativity. The earlier works are asemic paintings using a subtractive technique (‘text’ paintings) and works that use bands of acrylic skins for knotting and weaving (‘drag’ paintings). More recently, I have used acrylic skins in eggshell inlay work (inspired by traditional Vietnamese lacquer paintings) and have also developed some innovative ways of painting with acrylic on Yupo paper. My contemporary drawings with graphite and Chinese ink on Yupo have been selected as finalists in New Zealand’s prestigious Parkin Drawing Prize for 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021. They have also taken me to the finals of the Wallace Art Awards and traveling exhibition for 2020/2021.

β β β β β Amazing ideas and art techniques! Morag gave me really perfect ideas what I can create with kids in my job. For example I'd never heard about 'gel technique' before. She is very patient and friendly teacher. I strongly recommend Morag's lessons/workshops to everyone who want to improve their techniques and creative thinking! :)

β β β β β Morag Stokes is an incredibly talented artist and teacher. She is also a lovely person with great people skills, patience and an understanding of strengths and weaknesses. Recently I was lucky enough to have had a few private consultations at the studio to work on a painting. I really learned so much from Morag. Not only is the studio spacious, clean and really well equipped, everything is there for your use ...I didn't need to supply anything. Morag has everything ready and prepared for you to get started. ( Lunch and tea breaks whenever needed too !! ) I am not a great artist but after a few days tuition with Morag a beautiful painting began to emerge. She allowed me to do everything myself with careful guidance and advice all the way through, I really enjoyed the whole experience very much and would highly recommend to anybody. Money very well spent.

β β β β β Morag is a great tutor, she checks in with what you are doing and often gives some awesome ideas you might like to explore. Morag is an experimental artist, and is always looking to see what a particular paper, or medium can do, then takes it further than first thought possible. Morag has a huge amount experiences to draw from, which often comes with a hilarious story to it. After our sessions, Morag sends us all an email, with helpful links to things we may have chatted about, or just times and dates we need to remember. I totally get more out of my art sessions than I pay for, its informative, creative, and fun :O)
