the final resting place of the First bishop of New Zealand from the Diocess of Auckland. A wonderful place to visit if you love Catholic History.

In Motuti, below the altar of St Marys Church, is buried the heart of New Zealand and Maori Catholicism. For there lies the mortal remains of the country's first Catholic Bishop, Jean-Baptiste François Pompallier, who established the religion in this country. He was interred at Notre Dame Cathederal, Paris in 1871 after 30 years here. The late, much-loved Pa Henare Tate, the first Māori to be ordained as a diocesan priest, and others petitioned the French government to return Bishop Pompallier to his spiritual home of North Hokianga. In 2002 the casket, carved by Pa Henare's son George, containing the Bishop's remains, was returned to Motuti after a hikoi and several hui throughout New Zealand's six dioceses. Though I am neither religious nor Catholic, I was privileged to be there. It was a deeply moving experience and I have been going back there ever since. I now consider Motuti my spiritual home. I wholeheartedly recommend it.
