About Nga Kakano Foundation Family Health Services medical centre
Ngā Kākano Foundation is a tangata whenua owned and operated organisation established in 1986 by our kuia Piatarihi Kihirini (Tapuika, Tūhourangi, Ngā Pōtiki, Ngāti Pūkenga) focused on empowering rangatahi through the teaching of traditional tribal history, the pursuit of knowledge and excellence.
Over the years Ngā Kākano Foundation has been privileged to have at its helm strong visionary leaders supported by wahine toa passionate about growing better futures for our tamariki, rangatahi, whānau.
This included 10 years of weekly kapa haka, waiata mōteatea, history (on a voluntary basis); the establishment of koeke meaningful activities program (continues to operate today) and the retracing of the footsteps of our tūpuna by local tamariki, rangatahi to Raiatea (Tahiti), Rarotonga and Hawaii.
Since then Ngā Kākano Foundation has expanded, providing health and social services to whānau/families living in the Te Puke District. Today Ngā Kākano Foundation provides a comprehensive range of community based health services including GP Practice, Asthma, Diabetes Education and Case Management, Wellchild/Tamariki Ora, Mental Health & Addictions services, Koeke Programme and Whānau Ora.
We acknowledge our relationships we have established with the Western Bay of Plenty PHO, Ngā Mataapuna Oranga as we acknowledge the key people who led and supported our organisation over the past 30 years: Piatarihi Kihirini, Vincent Kihirini, Hoana Taiatini, Patariki Te Hiini, Cath Hauraki, Maina, Tui and Crete Wihapi, Rarunga Wihapi, Ani Potiki, Ririao Wilson, Wharehuia Tamati, Perenara and Kahureremoa Moke; and present whakaruruhau roopū member Raiha Allen..
As Ngā Kākano Foundation evolves the core values of who we are will continue to guide us into the

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Below Average Medical centre. Always hard to get an appt, even when you book a week or 2 in advanced they either cancel on you or you're there waiting for hours. Barely answer their phones so have to physically go into to try get an appt (I live rural). When and if you finally get to see a doctor they rush you through without anything to where you practically have to beg for a prescription (exprienced this with my kids who had chickenpox - beg for creams because they are subsidised through prescription). Ive had to book an appt just to get a contraception prescription because they wont give me one over the counter. I would change medical pracs but as a family of 7 we cant afford the stand down period of most medical centres nearby.
