★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Ngawi is a small coastal community tucked on the flats on the beautiful, windswept South Wairarapa coast. It's beautiful on a sunny day, and magnificent on days when the southerly winds roar in from the Cook Strait. Most visitors pass through Ngawi on the way to their way to the famous Cape Palliser lighthouse further up the coast, which is a pity because they miss out on great, fresh seafood from the Captain's Table food caravan on the waterfront at Ngawi.
One of the most interesting activities in Ngawi is the launching and retrieval of local cray and fishing boats which fish the coast. Old bulldozers launch the fishing boats, on massive steel trailers, down the steep gravel beach and into often high seas. Watching these very skilled crews laucnch and recover the boats in high seas is a nail-biting experience and a must for keen fisher people for anyone who thinks they know something about boat handling!
