★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I had back surgery in September last year and I’m currently still rehabilitating. I simply went in to get some pain relief in the form of panadeine as I prefer this to the heavy prescribed codeine. I have been to this pharmacy many times before and been completely transparent with my condition and treatment. I only went to this pharmacy rather runs my regular one as I was next door, it was convenient and as I said, I have been many times before in the past year. They asked me previously to get a prescription, which requires me to pay for a doctors visit and I had forgotten in any case as it was over a month ago. The pharmacist then asked me to prove I was in rehabilitation and receiving treatment, by showing him a document that stated this, which I did. He then proceeded to ask me if he could contact my doctor which is as far as I’m concerned, is a step too far and a breach of my privacy and treatment, especially as I’d already done what he’d asked and proven that I was in rehabilitation and explained I could get a script for codeine but I prefer the lower dosage in the form of panadeine. I also have Crohn’s disease which means this is the only effective medication I can take. All of this was explained to the pharmacist yet I was interrogated and made to feel like a pain relief seeking junkie, which is not the case. It was embarrassing, inappropriate and contacting my doctor to do a further check only made me feel worse after having done what he’d asked to prove my situation as it was. I understand they have a duty of care to ensure that people are not abusing it, however if they require doctors approval to sell it over the counter, it simply should not be an over the counter drug, which it won’t be very shortly anyway.
I will not be returning to this pharmacy in the future.
