About St. Mary's Anglican Church
St. Mary’s has stood on the premises on Princes St, Hawera for over 125 years. We are part of the Archdeaconry of Waitotara along with The Church of the Good Shepherd, Waverley, St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church and St. George’s Anglican Church, Patea, Wesley Methodist Church, Hawera, St Barnabas Opunake, All Saints’ Eltham, Holy Trinity Stratford & Kaponga Community Church.
The Archdeacon Chester Borrows was appointed in January 2020
The church is also supported by retired priests and lay ministers who focus on outreach in the community, at rest home services and special remembrance services.
St. Mary’s has 26 beautiful windows with inscriptions and histories which are unique. The windows in the nave were given over a period of 40 years by various parishioners as memorial windows.
The firm who made the windows is known as Whitefriars – which operated from 1680 until its closure in 1980. For instance if you go to the window of St Polycarp you will notice the figure of a Friar in the bottom right corner. This was the WhiteFriar’s trademark. Smaller such ‘signatures’ can be seen in the windows for Isaiah, David and Paul.

One could liken plans for the soon to be earthquake strengthened church, to the film Sister Act.
Dinners with all the trimmings wine and all and speakers not sermons are intended.
Today a community garden of seeds to seeds cycle - not, just growing veges, was launched in conjunction with Sustainable Taranaki. 20+ gathered to hear of plans and gather ideas while all enjoying fresh home baking and BBQ.

Music and food events from later in year once strengthening complete.
ALL welcome - all creed & culture gender and preference, help development of a place of peace fellowship in both the garden for reflection and horticulture cycle seed to seed and all in between.
