β β β β β Interesting place that's worth a look. Free to look around outside and go in the church but $10 to go in the old house

β β β β β Te Waimate Mission House is the only building remaining of the model English town that missionaries established in the area. I liked that they decorated the house with some of the original furniture. However, unless you love history or have a personal connection, you can probably skip the mission. The oldest oak tree in New Zealand is located in Waimate North, but it doesn't seem to be looking too good.

β β β β β Very interesting place to visit. Take a picnic as the gardens are beautiful and you can also visit the church while you are there.

β β β β β Beautifully maintained house. 4th mission house in NZ. It was the first settlement inland of the bay of islands. If you love to learn more about history of NZ, this place is well worth a visit! A lot of information is available and the items in the house are very interesting to see. The lady that welcomed us also told a lot on the history of the house and the people that lived their. How their lives were and what struggles they had at that time. Next door is the St. John the Baptist Church, which is also worth a visit (you can have a look inside).

β β β β β The Te Waimate Mission had an important role in Aotearoaβs early PΔkehΔ history and is a key Tohu Whenua site in the Bay of Islands (all of which are well worth visiting). Open Saturday to Monday in winter and Friday to Tuesday in summer, the volunteer guides know everything there is to know about the early history of European settlement and interactions with MΔori. To say that life was tough is an understatement. Fun fact: Charles Darwin paid a visit. Well worth the $10 admission fee - free if you are a member of Pouhere Taonga/ Heritage New Zealand.
