★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 40 Don Croot Street, or how it has come to be affectionately know by it's regulars 'The Croot', is a modern and stylish venue offering a charming evening filled with star studded delight.
Upon arrival, the cast of The Croot offered me the warmest of welcomes and remedied my empty hands with refreshments and firm but enjoyable highfives.
Asides from the incredible introductions, The Croot offer a cast of entertainers you do not want to miss. From the brightest highs of comedy to the darkest lows of tragedy, The Croot have something for everyone. One of the performers, Ben Black, an actor known for such roles as Caine in The Cul De Sac and Brutus in Season Two of Netflix's Roman Empire: Reign of Blood, treated me to his latest stand-up comedy set and BOY was it good. Ben Black is a gifted natural, watch out Hollywood!
After the side splitting comedy set, I had the pleasure of exchanging witty banter and wholesome chuckles with the infallible Joe Nathan, an actor known such roles as Aiden in Legend of the Seeker and Rob Lattimore from Shortland Street. Joe was a natural conversationalist and was dressed as a Watermelon the entire time, so cool!
Another event on offer was the electrifying Basement Rave, DJ'ed by none other than Head Tenant and Resident Bad Boy, Jonathan James. Jonathan is a talented musician, well known for his work as Sky in Auckland Musical Theatre's Mamma Mia, and he definitely knows how to groove to Mambo No.5.
It was a great chance to dance with some of Auckland's Hottest Socialites and the opportunity to blow off some steam while the world slowly dies arounds us was a freeing experience.
I found myself, like I so often do on an evening of revelry, seeking some open and entertaining conversation.
In an area usually saved for desperate durry fiends, The Croot's Premium Smokers Lounge offered a warm and cozy spot to spark such a thing. With a cushion of fairylights and a blanket of vape clouds, I found myself snug as a bug, laughing and enjoying another guests repartee about The Greatest Horror Films of All Time. The Croot truly offers something special!
I enjoyed my visit to The Croot and look forward to immersing myself in their incredible atmosphere again. If you are ever given the chance, do yourself a favour and head along. My only regret is not getting to spend more time with the other cast members but ah well.... guess I'll have to go again ?
