β β β β β Dave was lovely - my friend lives locally and when I said I was thinking of a piece of ponamu for my nieces as gifts, she took me straight off the main street, away from the tourist shops and jewellers, to see Dave.
I'm so glad she did. I may have a bit of a crystal habit (with over 160 pieces at home!) and I have a spectacular piece of ponamu or myself, so luckily I was not too distracted by all the goodies in his shop and got quite focused on looking for the gifts I might want. Although I wasn't determined and at one point actually decided they were too young. Dave asked me 'How old?' - they're 3 and 1 ... he said an option was to hang them in their room until they're old enough then they can start wearing them .... this was cool - but at first I could only find one perfect piece .... and I was in a rush to get to the airport (not useful - give yourself time!)
In the end I said a firm and decisive 'nope not today' and decided to leave - there was never any push from Dave to buy, nice explanation when asked, but no push. As I was going to leave a second piece caught my eye .... so I changed my mind and gave them to Dave for me to buy - when he went of to polish and cleanse them ..... a third piece found me ..... and although he'd already polished the second piece he just asked 'boy or girl' ... when I said girl, he agreed - the third piece was better and happily polished that for me instead.
I've got two lovely little pieces of the land that I love to share with my nieces and feel like I've supported a genuine man with a fabulous small business.
Go there. Enjoy. Buy if you want to ... wish I'd known he ran workshops to create your own piece - but possibly good for my wallet to not spend much more time in there!
