Why choose Tino Structures?

Tino Structures is New Zealand's leading structural engineering consultancy that always puts our clients’ needs at the forefront of everything we do.  We specialise in structural engineering for new construction, alteration, extension, conversion, refurbishment and seismic projects. As structural engineering consultants, we offer our clients more than 17 years' experience in structural design, seismic assessment, research and development and project management in New Zealand.

Residential Homes to billion-dollar infrastructure

Tino Structures is led by Dr John Jing, who is one of New Zealand’s top structural engineers. Since 2004, John has been involved in many new-build projects ranging from single-storey houses to multi-million-dollar multi-storey buildings and multi-billion-dollar infrastructure projects, including bridges. It comes as no surprise that property owners/developers, councils and leading engineering firms continue to rely on John’s extensive experience and expertise.

Why is Structural Engineering so important?

Structural engineering is essential to society because it directly impacts the safety and durability of our buildings and structures. It is structural engineering that determines a hospital’s ability to survive an earthquake, a warehouse to endure gale-force winds and bridges to support safe weight maximums.

As structural engineers, we are also tasked with ensuring that materials and resources are used efficiently. But we must also work within the design aesthetics of a project, combining practical function, budgetary considerations and visual appeal in a way that satisfies all requirements of the structure.

structural efficiency and resilience

Combining leading research with practical experience, we are capable of maximising structural efficiency and resilience. Structural efficiency can be defined in many ways, but we will try to optimise space utilisation within a building while keeping structural costs at the minimum. New Zealand is an extremely earthquake-prone nation. Our seismic design capabilities include low-damage and damage-avoidance systems such as base isolation, hybrid dampers, buckling-restrained braces, rocking walls and frames and slip-friction connections, making buildings more resilient to major earthquakes.

Modular construction

Most of us are aware, the two key issues facing housing in New Zealand are affordability and availability. Fortunately, modular homes, prefab buildings and pre-built homes are set to become part of the solution. Since 2008, Dr John Jing has conducted leading research to address structural design issues for multi-storey modular buildings in New Zealand. A key challenge is in meeting New Zealand's seismic requirements, but the answer is finally here: Our proprietary inter-module connection devices make a multi-storey modular building earthquake-resilient and cheaper and faster to build!

A Registered High-Risk Producer Statement Author

Dr John Jing is a registered high-risk producer statement author (structural) and one of a handful of structural engineers on the Auckland Council’s high-risk register. This means he is an Auckland Council-approved professional that can issue Producer Statements (PS1, PS2 and PS4) for buildings and structures deemed high risk. A Producer Statement is a professional opinion based on sound judgment and specialist expertise. Aspects of this work is outside the Council's in-house expertise. A Producer Statement helps the Council determine whether building work complies with the New Zealand Building Code (NZBC) requirements and helps them decide whether to issue a Building Consent or Code Compliance Certificate (CCC).
