About Travel Insurance New Zealand (TINZ)

MOTORBIKE TRAVEL INSURANCE FAQs

We believe that you should have the freedom to experience the world on two wheels. Motorbikes and scooters are a popular way to get around in many overseas destinations but it's important to stay safe.  Understand what's covered and wha'ts not, with our common motorcycle questions.

  • Q. Am I covered to ride a motorbike or scooter?
  • Yes, all TINZ policies cover you to ride a motorbike (regardless of whether you are the driver or riding pillion) but you MUST wear a helmet. You must also be licenced to ride a motorcycle of the same class in New Zealand and hold a valid licence for the country you are in.  If you were to sustain an injury while riding a motorbike or scooter you’d be covered provided you are law abiding, licenced and wear a helmet.

  • Q. what kind of motorbikes do you cover?
  • We cover you to ride motorbikes, motorcycles, scooters, vespas, mopeds and any other two-wheeled or three-wheeled motorised bike.

  • Q. is there a restriction on engine capacity?
  • It does not matter the engine size of the bike, as long as you are licenced to ride that class of motorcycle. You are insured to ride a bike with an engine displacement up to 50cc with a New Zealand driving licence.  If riding a bike over 50cc, you must have a motorcycle licence valid for the same class of vehicle for the country you are riding in.

If your licence restricts the engine size that you can ride then you'll need to stick to that while you are away.  For example, if you want to ride a 1000cc motorbike then you must be licensed to do so in New Zealand as well as in the country you’re riding in.

  • Q. Do i have to pay extra to ride a scooter or motorbike?
  • No, TINZ doesn't charge any extra if you want to ride a motorccyle on your holiday. We want you to enjoy the ride without the worry. Whether you're hiring a moped for one day or a motorbike for a month, we've got you covered as long as you're wearing a helmet and you or the driver are licenced to ride that class of bike.

  • Q. do I have to wear a helmet?
  • Yes, no matter which country you’re riding in you must wear a helmet.  Even if you are not reqiured by the law to wear a helmet in that country, our travel insurance policy requires you to wear one. You’ll also need a helmet if you are a passenger on a motorcycle, moped or scooter.  If you’re not wearing a helmet during an accident, you won’t be covered.

  • Q. HOW DO I VALIDate my licence for overseas travel?
  • Licence requirements vary from country to country but an Internation Driving Permit (IDP) is recognised in most countries and recommended in many. Particularly where English is not a native language as it provides translations into many languages.

    • International Driving Permits are valid for 12 months from date of issue and should be obtained prior to your travels.
    • An IDP can only be issued to a full licence holder who is over 18 years of age.
    • An IDP is not a driving licence in its own right. You must also carry your current New Zealand's driver licence with you when you travel.

These countries, do not accept IDPs or current New Zealand driving licences: Tonga, China, Samoa and Niue. However a Visitor's Driving Licence can be obtained after arrival. You will be required to provide a current New Zealand driving licence to the authorities and pay a Visitor's Driving Licence fee.

  • Q. do you COVER the bike IF I DAMAGE it?
  • Unfotunately not.  You shoul make sure you’re fully insured for the motorbike or scooter you’re hiring.  It's a good idea to check the bike for damage before you ride it and ensure any damage is noted in the documentation so you don’t pay for it later.

TINZ's Rental Vehicle Excess Insurance covers sedans, hatchbacks, SUV’s, 4WD, station-wagons, motorhomes and campervans rented from a licenced rental company.  It does not cover hiring of motorbikes, mopeds and scooters. I am very disappointed with their service during the Covid-19 crisis times. The chat is the only way to get in touch, as they don't pick up their phones and it is hardly ever available. A guy called Steve, that I have chatted with weeks ago promised me a written response, but I am waiting to receive their answer. Would not consider using them again, as in times of crisis you can see which companies are the ones you should use in the future.

Terrible terrible service avoid TINZ. Had prebooked my travel insurance with TINZ only to find out they had triple charged me and my husband. Just trying to get my money back from them is terrible I spent many days calling and emailing them. So because of their poor handling in returning my money back I cancelled my insurance policy. If this is the way they treat their customers when they have made a mistake I would hate to deal with them if I had to put a claim through.

We had a family holiday to Vietnam recently and paying for travel insurance youd expect to be covered. First and last time I will ever use TINZ. My wife lost her iPhone and we were hoping to go back to the cafe hoping it had been handed in so no police report done. I was told today (4.5.19) by TINZ 0800 number that I will be lucky if I get paid $100 from TINZ. Relentless emails for their information requirements and then they just keep on asking for the same stuff over and over again. They also asked if I had a Mastercard because unbeknown to me I already had travel cover due to having a Mastercard and it was a way for TINZ having not too pay a cent. I’ve had enough and I’m giving up. I have never had an experience like this with an insurance company before. We will just have to buy my wife another phone and spend. Update. TINZ have made contact to explain what I was told was wrong and they have reviewed my claim and have decided to pay out for my wifes phone after we have purchased another I phone. Very happy with TINZ. JUST MAKE SURE IF SOMETHING GETS STOLEN have proof of purchase and Get a police report. Thanks TINZ. ?

I purchased travel INsurance from this company in Feb2020, for a trip to the States. Covid hit, and I can't find a phone number for them, they don't answer emails, and they have my money. Obviously they are not playing fair.

I made a claim for a phone and wallet - they didn't even get back to me after I filled in their online forms and emailed them! Would have expected at least some contact to tell me about if it was valid or if I needed any different attachments. This was ages ago so have let it go, just definitely recommend you use someone who actually replies (Southern Cross is fantastic, have used them before and the claims process was good. Zoom I have bought but without needing to claim anything).

We unfortunately had to make a claim on our travel insurance due to a family member passing away a few days before our trip was due to start. I submitted the forms online and was contacted that night confirming they had the claim and needed another document, once I submitted the extra information I was contacted again quickly and advised our claim was reviewed and accepted. Fast and friendly service from Ben in customer service. Thanks so much for sorting this quickly.

We booked with this company last year because of the favourable reviews.Trip cancelled and we opted to take the credits for future travel.Wanting to clarify that as long as we activated the credits by 12/11/21 we could use for travel 2022. No response to 4 emails and last year’s voice message. No one to talk to. Not at all reassuring.

I have used this company many times over the years, but since Covid-19 hit they have become very unresponsive and unprofessional. They have no telephone contact and are very slow or do not reply to emails. I will not use them in future for this reason. In fact I can't believe they are still advertising and behaving like a real insurance company?? Buyer beware!
