Beautiful camp spot would go here over and over again... River, water falls, giant swing bridge and amazing bush walks with large camping area... Honestly one of my favorite spots even in winter it's nice just pack good shoes for the walks haha road out there is gravel and quite brutal so would recommend a high up car or 4x4

This secluded campsite is at the head of two spectacular gorges above the Waiohine River. A popular area for rafting, canoeing, swimming, and outdoor education. Waiohine Gorge Campground is set in a beautiful bush setting, located above a river junction and next to one of the best accessible swing bridges in New Zealand. Access along a lengthy gravel road that gets quite tight as you get towards the gorge - Something to consider if you have a large vehicle. However, the effort is well rewarded! The Waiohine Gorge is an idyllic spot for family-friendly camping, swimming and short and long walks. The suspension bridge over the Waiohine River forms a spectacular gateway to the Tararua Forest Park. The walks from here can be as long or as short as you choose. Either way there is spectacular scenery to be had. One of the tramps from here is the two day Totara Flats route which takes you to a beautiful setting where the Waiohine River meets Totara Creek. Take advantage of the excellent swimming hole right in front of the hut. Stay safe when you're swimming - always check the mountain forecast, as rain can make river levels rise suddenly. Parking is available 1km from the entrance to Waiohine Gorge. A high clearance car is best for driving into the parking area. Camping is permitted either in secluded bush areas or open settings at the road-end. Turn into Dalefield Road, Carterton and follow the yellow Taraura Forest Park signs.

The way to this popular campsite is well signposted, except the signage on the last road where you turn off is nearly overgrown in a hedge. The narrow gravel road that leads to the DoC campsite at the gorge is one lane wide in a couple of places due to slips. The condition of the road was generally good when I went at the beginning of Feb 2018. Camping spots are dotted about and thus can be quite private. 2x flushing toilets and limited wet weather cover are the basic amenties to be had here. This spot is the gateway to many hikes and depending on the weather, how fit and equipped one is, you can hike to Otaki forks. Remember this is treated as an alpine hike. Swimming in the fresh water river is always refreshing, hanging out under a waterfall, fishing for trout from Sept to May and walking across an iconic swing bridge are other ways to enjoy your time in the Tararua Forest Park.

Nice camp sites. Swing bridge is very high if you are afraid of heights. Be warned. Track to the flats is drought. You will be watching your foot placement more than anything else. Also quite boggy. Good waterproof bootong recommended. After rain.

Beautiful place to camp and have fun. A small waterfall (natural shower) and lots of places to dive into the river.

Came here in summer, the river is perfect for a hot day. And there are dedicated spots for bonfire. Just a little advise, Pls bring your insect repellant or you'll be feasted by lots of sun flies. The road to the campsite is unpaved and mostly one way, so just be prepared.

Great place to camp. Small camping fee per person was all good as toilets were well cleaned and stocked and the grounds were nice and tidy. We all had a great time.
