About Wanganui Stockcar & Speedway Club
Sitting on a hill alongside the Whanganui River, and overlooking the Tasman Sea, Oceanview Family Speedway is known as “the Oval by the Ocean”. Built by Roy Eaton and Paul Carrick, along with a band of willing helpers, the speedway opened for its first race meeting on 29 October 1972.
Run and promoted by the Wanganui Stockcar and Speedway Club, Oceanview has produced a number of New Zealand champions in a variety of classes, along with some of New Zealand speedway’s best personalities. It is a Stockcar track first and foremost, but has also had a proud history in the Sidecar class. Significantly for the future of the sport, it was at Oceanview where Ministocks were first designed and built, by Darryl Taylor. In recent seasons the majority of New Zealand champions in the Stockcar, Superstock and Minisprint classes have been graduates of Youth Ministocks.
47 years on from that opening meeting, Oceanview goes from strength to strength. In the 2018-19 season it will be known as Fast Lane Spares Oceanview Family Speedway. The vehicles competing – Superstocks, Stockcars, Youth and Adult Ministocks, Production Saloons, Sidecars, Midgets and Minisprints – are a far cry from the cars in the 1972-73 season. Families are important too, and there are many second and even third generation competitors, with names like Mooney, Smith, Duncan, Johnston, Podjursky, Barnes and Baxter to the fore.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Oceanview speedway is by the Ocean and Wanganui Airport , it's a great track, the track has ministocks, stockcars, superstocks, home to the famous Charlie Bernston who was well known for his antics on the track. The home of Darryl Taylor and the big hitting, stirrer, Dion Mooney.
