About Waverley Golf Club

One of the “black sheep” courses of NZ, W.G.C is a hidden gem with black sand that shapes this great gold land.

Renowned golf course architect Tom Doak has rated W.G.C as the 10th best in NZ in his book Confidential Guide to Golf Courses vol 5.

This is after evaluating the world’s best courses and in 2018 our Waverley country course made the cut.

W.G.C was established in 1965. It was all cleared mainly by members using their own DC3 Oliver tractor with a blade on the front.

The course was designed by Ernie Southerden, a pro golfer from Napier, and has developed into what it is today.

With its natural contours, W.G.C is a must visit!

Nice course with some challenging holes. Friendly welcome from greenkeeper, who also assured us it wouldn't rain and he was right. Well worth a visit.

January 2018 - Lives up to it's new found reputation May 2021 - Review updated for another visit. This time stumbled in on the midday Wednesday haggle. Got to play the round with a great crew with lots of character On this visit, discovered a extremely nasty stretch of rough on the Ladies Mile, resulting on a very nasty blowout - well into double figures. So beware the infamous snake alley. To make it worse, I had been warned - lol. Many Thanks for a great day.

This place is seriously one of the best layouts in New Zealand. Don't expect finely manicured fairways of Kauri Cliffs but do expect a very natural links style layout with a few holes that wouldn't be out of place on any course in the world. For instance 'Canyon' the seventh looks just like its been upped and lifted from Royal Birkdale. The locals are good value too, always up for a yarn and an excuse to stay for another beer, real good buggers. Honestly, I can't recommend this place enough, any semi-serious golfer has got to try and get here at some stage, Club day is 1100 Sunday and you will be made more than welcome. ? VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

What a gem for a golf course. If you look past the sheep and their by-product, you'll discover a topography that presents a great challenge and uniqueness which is usually only found on multi-million dollar courses! The best value for $20 I have ever spent on a round of golf - just be prepared to do a bit of post round clean up! Lol

Super interesting little country course, it’s got sheep everywhere, as well as all the pop that comes with that, but has some lovely holes on a terrain that god decided would make a wonderful course. If half the courses in NZ were similarly blessed, we’d be the envy of the world. I imagined I was playing in the late 18th century when spinning round here. Next time I bring the hickories. Expect nothing from club house, usual honesty box outside. It takes water well, we played after massive amounts of rain and the sand base just drank it all. Greens were well maintained and quicker that I expected. Awesome value for $20pp for 18 holes.
