Did you know that not all sand is alike? Especially when it comes to aquariums, the type of substrate you choose will have a significant impact on the condition of your tank and the types of life it can support. Before you start filling up your waterbox aquarium, consider the following information:
- Know what type of sand and what level of fineness will work best for your proposed tank. Some sand is much coarser and larger, while other types have extremely fine particles. Each has unique pros and cons you should research.
- Certain types of fish prefer other substrates, such as gravel, over the presence of sand. Be aware that it is not usually wise to mix the two as this can complicate tank biology and place unnecessary stress on some fish.
- Some sands, called "live" sands, come with unique bacterial formulations in intended to work in symbiosis with other elements in your tank. Live sands can last longer in some scenarios and can require less cleaning than dry bagged sand.
