About Able Spaces Transportable Homes

Norma, owner and founder of Able Spaces, first got into the construction industry by chance in 2011. She was given the opportunity to recover a dormant demolition company with a business partner and take it to Christchurch to help with the post earthquake recovery. Together they rapidly grew the business and this is where her love of wearing steel cap boots and hi-vis started.

Norma’s background is varied to say the least, but was mainly in the corporate world. From studying Human Resources at Massey University, to working in Finance in Sydney, doing random jobs while travelling through Europe and South America then getting into HR and payroll when back in New Zealand. Norma also worked as an Account Manager with Trade Me Jobs, then as an Executive Assistance for the CEO and Head of Sales at PropertyIQ, studied and worked for herself as a Personal and Business Coach, before being a Management Consultant focusing on process improvement. All this before her husband gave her the opportunity to get into demolition, which Norma grabbed with both hands and ran with it. The rest is history..

When the business partnership came to an end, Norma sought a new opportunity for innovation and entered a license agreement to produce a range of portable, prefabricated buildings in 2015. Here, she quickly learnt the limitations of working under a license agreement. Restricted by the licensor’s standard designs and specifications, there was little freedom to explore new layouts, approaches and materials. Deciding to go at it alone and focus on a nationwide need, Norma terminated her license agreement and Able Spaces began.

We aim to change the way housing is built in New Zealand.

With major issues in the current housing environment, we believe transportable homes are part of a bigger solution. Too many kiwis live in poverty, in some cases eight people in a two-bedroom home. Prices have skyrocketed over the past decade, making house ownership less obtainable for everyday New Zealanders’. As the income gap continues to increase, there is no system in place to replenish the current housing market.

We believe transportable homes are part of the solution.

While the government is implementing timely initiatives, site-built homes are not constructed quickly enough to keep up with demand. With a growing population yet not enough homes, transportable homes are an effective alternative. Constructed efficiently in a workshop setting, transportable homes are an affordable, sustainable solution to New Zealand’s housing crisis.

Every New Zealander deserves a warm, healthy, affordable home.

We believe in a future where every kiwi is able to access an affordable, sustainable, liveable home. In an industry where textbook approaches are the norm, we’re here to bring a fresh perspective. Our team is driven by innovation, seeking ways to continuously improve our transportable homes. We give back to our local community, because there is no greater reward than making someone’s day.

Owned by a woman, Able Spaces is proud to stand out in a male dominated industry. Service is at the forefront of who we are, as each client deserves their dream home! Clients deal with us directly, so you won’t deal with middlemen or chain of confusing communication. While many competitors offer standard portable home designs that cannot be altered, we build to order. With a range of designs for inspiration, we work alongside our customers to make their vision a reality.

We purchased a minor dwelling from them this year. Fantastic quality, fantastic service and very very good value. We have had a lot of interest from our customers and we have given out Able Spaces details. The lady moving into it can't wait.

Incredible generosity and community spirit from Able Spaces who so kindly donated a Portable Building to us for our resource/staff room for our not for profit community childcare centre. This was a HUGE surprise to us after fundraising for over 10 years with other things always coming up. Norma went above and beyond to make this happen and we are so grateful. The resource room is lovely, spacious and warm and will be used for many years to come. Thank you Able Spaces!

We required a unit to add to our existing bach at Riversdale Beach and after investigate the options available we went with Able Spaces. We found Norma to be extremely open and honest. She readily incorporated the changes we required and advised us of things we hadn't considered. Nothing was too much trouble and we were welcome to visit and check on progress as our unit was being built. The finished unit was delivered by Hammond Transport in June this year. The delivery and placement was stress-less and went without any issues. We find the unit to be incredibly warm, it feels rigid and solid and is very roomy. We love it so much we spent more time at the beach than at home. We have received many positive comments on the unit and display the Able Spaces logo with pride. We have provided Norma's contact details to a number of people who are looking at doing what we have done. We are totally satisfied with Norma and Able Spaces and can recommend her without hesitation. Ray & Jill Walker

Dealing with Norma at Able Spaces was an experience where we were kept informed of progress on our new custom built office that has arrived on site in tip top condition. All the comments from clients (including builders) are very favourable about the fitout and the quality of the build. Thanks Norma and her team. A very happy customer here!

Love this company! They communicate well and we used a portable building for many months which was of excellent quality and reasonable price. Norma is very helpful and nothing is ever a problem, as an example we had a unit shifted by flood waters and Able Spaces were on site with us the very next day to get it relocated to its correct position. five stars, would recommend to anyone.

We had Norma & her team at Able Spaces build us a small two bedroom home. Norma was great to work with through the entire process - trustworthy, reliable, and nothing was ever a problem. We were able to customise the home as much as we liked, which was great. Communication was always fast, and we knew what was happening at every stage. The house itself is really well built - solid, warm, good attention to detail, and very affordable for our young family. Highly recommend these guys if you're looking for a new building
