About Akarangi Wines

About us - Akarangi church

'Us' is the Osborne family. We have owned and operated Akarangi in Havelock North since 1981, and the Kiddle side of the family has been in the Tukituki valley since the 1950s; there are 4 generations of us wandering around these parts now.

We grow our grapes, make our wine, and package and sell it on the premises. Our cellar door / tasting room is a relocated former Hawke's Bay church - a 19th century native timber building which served the Clive Presbyterian parish before being moved here - a happy coincidence, with the Akarangi name, which translates from te reo Māori as 'vines of the heavens', existing before the church was brought here.

We aim to do as much as we can ourselves - in the vineyard and winery this is a means of maintaining full control of the process and ensuring quality - but it also applies to everything we do - hand-carved signs, stained glass windows - we want to provide a setting as individual as our wines. We're about as far as you can get from the big commercial wineries, and we appreciate every visitor we get out here - so please feel free to come for a visit and tasting, and see something a bit different in our little part of the world.

A little gem hidden away in Hawke's Bay. The church setting is beautiful and the wines are delicious. We had an interesting chat with the family patriarch and you can tell that a lot of love goes into making their wines. Very cool how small the production is, they stick on the labels and cork the wines right at the tasting table. Also quite affordable for the quality - $20 for white labeled bottles and $30 for black.

Wonderful experience. Beautiful wines. Mostly red wines! Amazing church with intimate tasting experience. I would highly recommend visiting. The gentleman who served us was extremely kind and a great conversationist.

Beautiful vineyard inside an old church. Great chat with the winemaker, who has a great sense of humour. Delicious wines. The Tempranillo is to die for! The best I have ever had!

Not really worth the hype. The wine we were offered tastings of (for free) were only reds which were average and no highly regarded tempranillo in sight. But quirky little church that was nice for photos but not really worth the trip out.

Fantastic little vineyard with alot of character largely due to the larger than life host. Full of beans and extremely entertaining conversation. Only reds available for tasting when we went but well worth the visit. Cheers ?

great spot to visit, beyond the vines a bike track on top of the flood bank stretches for miles across the orchards and vineyards all the way to the coast, great place for hiking, walking, cycling or just picnic by the river with lots of emerald pools to take a quick dip in the sweltering heat! come here often...

The wine was exceptional. The owner, a very colourful character imparting informative insights into land uses, & horticultural practices. A Very enjoyable interlude, to our adventurous day, exploring regional points of interest.

Akarangi Wines is a charming vineyard. It offers tastings of 4/5 reds (no whites as noted on their website). Morton is a delightful host with a colourful character. Highly recommended for a boutique wine experience in a quieter corner of Havelock North.
