About Us
We are Tript (Head Chef/co-owner) and Guru (Barista/co-owner).
We took over the restaurant as is with all its character, decor and welcoming locals. The only thing we’ve changed is the cuisine.
High quality modern infusion concept inspired by middle eastern, French and Asian cuisines with locally sourced ingredients. We create tasty and well put together dishes, make great coffee and have a talented mixologist behind the bar bringing the wow factor.
The atmosphere is laid back and casual with a sense of professionalism delivering on quality food and service.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The coffee was perfect. I had the complete vege for lunch - fresh and includes middle eastern spices, which made it something special and sets it apart from anywhere else I've been. My partner had the pork ramen, which was also good and more standard. We've been there every time we've traveled through, and we always look forward to returning. Great, friendly staff too.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Visited this week, food sounded amazing on the menu and presented really well but flavour combos were off. I had the bang bang butter chicken but wouldn't recommend. It's too rich and flavour fusion doesn't work. Also the kids bolognaise is chopped up steak instead of mince so not good for the fussier kids! The entrees were nice though.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We were recommended balter bar & kitchen by some locals. The venue was modern and quite spacious. They have a great range of craft beers on tap and the cider was very refreshing. The food was well presented and very generous. However it was felt quite rich and our meal was a bit too spicy to fully enjoy. We’d come back if we were in the area as it may have just been that particular meal selection that didn’t quite hit the mark. The staff were really friendly and helpful.

A real gem amongst the regular restaurants you find in the region.
The team at Balter are making food you will not be replicating at home, in a cosy and friendly environment.
Make sure you take their recommendations on their signature dishes, flaming cheese does exactly what it says on the tin and the flavours are fantastic.
If you have a sweet tooth, this lot will see to it that you will never want to leave.
They cater for all food allergies, even whipped up a brand new dessert for me when they found their existing selection wouldn’t suit me.
Cannot recommend this place highly enough!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I'm sitting in front of Balter's comfortable fireplace while I write this.
It's easy to drive past Balter if you don't know it's here because it has a narrow frontage. Don't miss it! -- it's huge inside, with a fantastic menu.
The proprietors are really friendly, and the food is delicious. I can recommend their Eggs Benedict and their Fried Chicken Burger. The chef has a way of selecting intriguing flavors to accompany the food.
Their menu will be expanding into new areas soon. I will definitely be back to try it out.
This isn't Fast Food, so make sure you leave yourself time to enjoy the experience. Menu prices are very reasonable, for what you get.
Balter is a great reason to visit Carterton.
