Costs
A GENERAL GUIDE: Prices for preparing a book for print may range from NZ$2-300 to $1000s depending on the complexity and size of the book. E-books will cost extra. NB: Printer's costs are separate again and depend on numbers of books printed. If there are no issues, a 130 page book (for print AND e-book) consisting mainly of text and a designed cover may cost about NZ$600 +GST all up - excluding account setup and uploading to Kindle. Books of 300+ pages with complex diagrams, charts, tables, photographs (needing editing), captions, footnotes/endnotes, bibliographies, indices, can take weeks to prepare and will cost much more. Good quality raw material provided in digital form will bring costs down. Obviously each book will need to be evaluated before costs can be known. Briar's Books is often praised for work of high quality. Briar does not exploit her clients, who find her professional, friendly, honest, careful, and trustworthy. Cheaper prices may be around, but the work may be sub-standard.

โ โ โ โ โ Jan Jensen and myself teamed up, and got Jan's first book published through Briar. The late Jan Jensen was the author of "Bread & Butter Miracles" and I was an art student at 'The Learning Connexion' at the time. Jan asked me if I would be interested in designing the cover of her book and although I wanted to, I lacked the technical know-how.
With the help and expertise of Briar, she prepared and formatted Jan's manuscript ready for printing. I had always wanted to learn how to design a book cover, so with Briar's expertise and support, she helped me design it - she even went as far as to offer me some tutoring. This went beyond the call of duty and I will always be grateful for Briar's willingness to encourage an up-coming art student. Briar was thorough and patient with the whole process and explained every step. She gave us options of paper types; font styles and sizes and different layouts. Then she sent us a proof to check before sending it off to the printers. We were delighted with the result. I would highly recommend Briar to anyone who is thinking about publishing - she is very experienced at what she does and is very people-orientated. She has a lovely sense of humour and nothing is too much trouble. Thanks a million Briar.

โ โ โ โ โ This was my first foray into self-publishing, and as such I came to it with the uncertainties of a tyro with respect to process and outcome. To name a few: what was involved, how would the working relationship pan out, how would things be coordinated with the editor/designer and printer, and how would the shipping process be best handled, since the order had to shipped to the US from New Zealand? The entire experience with Briar has been superlative and I am delighted with the result. Her experience, skill, efficiency and constructive suggestions are much appreciated, as are her observations related to many little, yet important, details like lettering, choice of color, presentation of large genealogical charts and handling the somewhat challenging cover content. And last but not least, her promptness in responding to my emails and delivering the finished product deserves appropriate plaudits. I would unhesitatingly call on Briar when it comes time for my next book.
