β β β β β I am a trained occupational therapist and have served on the board of a DHB for nine years. I understand the complexities of providing hospital-level care for our senior population. When my mother needed hospital-level care, I looked for a clean facility with caring staff and regular activities. Parklands seemed perfect. Unfortunately, the care provided's realities did not meet up to the standards suggested on their website or told to me by the staff. I have found the gardens get more care and attention than the residents. Bupa offered no activities on my mother's wing. Bupa told us there were regular outings for residents; however, they did not take my mother on one bus trip in her four-year residency. Residents were left in a room in front of a TV for hours on end. It wasn't easy to find the staff to help with toileting or eating. Residents were left until they had soiled their clothes before staff offered assistance. My mother was constantly drowsy and spoke very little.
Bupa placed residents who could not feed themselves on "special diets" consisting of pureed food, which was explained to me would avoid choking. I observed that staff could feed pureed food quicker as they do not have to wait while the residents chewed their food. Although there are beautiful grounds at Parklands, most hospital-level care residents are left inside and not taken out to enjoy it.
We moved our mother to a new rest home after Christmas. They did a medication review and reduced my mother's medication - she instantly became more alert. At her new home, there are activities every day. Staff are visible and stop to talk to my mother. She has returned to her od chatty self and jokes with her caregivers. My mother is now allowed to eat solid food that she loves. She is happy and active. There are no additional charges at the new rest home, saving several thousand dollars per year. We regret not moving my mother earlier. I urge you to look past the gardens when looking for hospital-level care for your loved one.

β β β β β If Bupa can't look after their staff, how do you expect Bupa to look after their residents?
Despite Bupa's size and profitability, they are not being responsible for their residents health and well being. Staff are responsible for their own flu shots. Considering staff are the first point of contact they should be vaccinated asap. "Not our job" Come on, get real.
Do yourself and your family members a favour and look for another facility where they know what "care" means.

β β β β β I visit the parklands apartments due to work. It's run by Lynda. She's takes great care of the residence. They lived independent living, but well monitored.
