★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The rating I’d give is zero stars-BE WARNED as you cannot predictably visit this attraction. The website tells you are only able to access certain hours around low tide. However, even so, it can also close on a dime and the website/administrators give you minimal help to know other than immediately (and I mean immediate!) proximate to your visit if it is actually open.
We planned to go the Dec 22 after I checked the website the night before but fortunately I checked the website again before we left to find it was closed when we were all ready to visit. I tried to contact the email address on the website to see about the open times for the next day but never heard back. We checked the night before and in the morning before leaving again on the 23rd within the “open” window right after 10 am, and it said it was going to be open at the time.
However, by the time we arrived after packing the car and driving about 20 minutes, we found it was closed. Some others were there who had travelled over 45 minutes to have the same disappointing experience.
The manager needs to clearly post the caves may possibly be closed even during the low tide open windows and what reasonable time frame you can at least count on it not closing if it says that it is going to be open. It would also help at least to see the criteria or rationale that determines closures beyond the low tide windows for appropriate planning so that visitors will actually want to come and at least not be as disappointed when they try to come and find it closed!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We showed up when it was supposed to be low tide, and it was open! Shame about the $10 per adult entry fee but it is on private Maori land, and roads need servicing, etc.
The caves themselves are interesting, and worth seeing once. It's a 'one and done' kind of experience.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Lovely lady at the site yesterday so friendly and helpful.
Steep path down. Very steep climb back up to the top. Recommended sneakers and a water bottle. I'm heavy and struggled a little bit but any reasonably fit person could cope. My 2. 5yo walked down fine.
Did miss 10 & 5 managed

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ WOW WOW WOW!!!!! What an amazing place. The bush walk down to the secluded private beach was magical. Then the beach itself was beautiful. And then boom the caves themselves were spectacular. Massive!! We only had a short time to experience them but it was enough. Walking back through the bush on sunset was like being in your own private little bush world - just wonderful.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great attraction. Make sure to check the tides on a few different websites before you go. don’t rely on the main website data.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Amazing caves! Two massive caves connect in a U shape. Bring your torch, phone light may not be sufficient. Only accessible during low tide (1 hour before to 1 hour after), so must plan accordingly. Check daily tide times from the website (cathedralcaves.co.nz). $10 per person (adult), EFTPOS machine available. Gravel road to the carpark. The walk down to the beach is gravel (no steps). No rubbish bin. Vault toilet.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It's a solid walk to the cave I would recommend going and seeing it at low tides while there is not many waves it is pretty impressive the cave goes so far back and is huge on the inside there is a smaller cave to climb up inside the cave and we got the money's worth out of it I would go and do it again and the beach is big and gets pretty windy as well photos below ⬇️
