β β β β β I found the maternity unit ok but our baby ended up in the nicu for a small amount of time and it was the worst experience I've ever had.
The staff were really cruel and lacked empathy.
I don't understand what possesses some people to be nurses when they have zero compassion for human beings.
If you can avoid this hospital is are say you will want to.

β β β β β TERRIBLE. The staff were negligent.
They will leave many woman traumatised.
I have made sure to file a complaint as I know far too many woman who have had a similar experience. Two of those who are so fearful and traumatised that they don't want to have anymore children due to their experience here. Something must change. NZ is a first world country I do not understand that this is the 'normal' experience for many who need to be here for giving birth.

β β β β β Terrible hospital
Left my partner and I traumatized after the birth of our baby in 2021. No where for my partner to spend the night as was a dining chair in the room so he drove home 45mins away sleep deprived after being awake for labour for over 27hrs and doesn't even remember the drive or going to bed.

β β β β β Looks like the staff doesnβt care about negative reviews. They seem to continue their shocking behaviour. Looks like only way things will improve is to fire everyone and get new staff in or sue the hospital for bad treatment.

β β β β β 50/50 chance you will get someone that doesn't treat you like a thorn in their life. Im impressed with the friendly staff that stay positive working in that enviroment. With continued complications, the best accidental decision we made was to get discharged the have continued care in chch hospital next door which have amazing staff, food and care.

β β β β β I recently had my baby here and the on call midwives are terrible. They don't ask permission or explain what they are doing leaving you feel very manhandled! They even gave my daughter the Vitamin K injection after birth without even asking me if that was what my partner and I wanted and then it was not recorded anywhere that they had done this. When my midwife arrived she saw the injection mark in my daughter's leg and she could have been double dosed if this had not been picked up. I am in the process of making a complaint. The after maternity care is also awful, I had to top up with formula before my milk came in and usually had to wait half an hour or more for someone to come after I rang the bell. Try telling a newborn they have to wait for their milk. All in all an extremely terrible experience for myself. I would not recommend coming to Christchurch woman's at all.

β β β β β I gave birth here in August 2020. I was in a lot of pain and requested an epidural but was turned down because they did not have a hospital midwife that could care for me who was epidural certified. My own midwife was not epidural certified but I was reassured prior that this wonβt be a problem as a hospital midwife would have been able to care for me. I highly recommend that you choose an epidural certified midwife if this is something that you could potentially want during labour.
My baby was taken to NICU after, and we had to stay at the hospital. My husband was only offered a hard chair overnight, and was not allowed to lie on the floor. This was after over 72hours of me in labour and he himself being exhausted.
I wish the hospital could be better funded to provide better services.
Otherwise I found the obstetrician who helped me and the NICU doctors all very helpful.
