About Cobblestones Museum

Cobblestones Museum is a working historic village run almost entirely by volunteers. The museum is named after the well-preserved cobblestone courtyard, built as a solid surface for horses, carts, and passengers who used the original stables. Six original heritage buildings (Category 2 listings with Heritage New Zealand) were either already on site or relocated to Cobblestones to recreate how Wairarapa’s early settlers lived in the 1800s. Exhibitions, artifacts, tours and education programmes help visitors understand settlers’ stories and how they’ve influenced our modern world.

This is a must visit place when you are in Greytown or in the neighbourhood. This is a museum that showcases early settlements of Greytown. It consists of a little village made to bring public closer to life of early settlers. You can see their first hospital, workshop, school, fire station and much more...

A pleasant way to spend an hour or two, ideal to separate kids from their devices.

2 stars and both solely for the one way car ride and the friendly driver who sparked a conversation. The whole experience was disappointing, to say the least. Visited Greytown for the final day of their Christmas Festival. As I was wandering around, I spotted the vintage cars driving people away and a lovely woman came up with a flyer advising free ride to the museum and free entry. I took her offer and had a lovely ride to the museum. Once there, I was met by 3 women at the entrance to the exhibit. I was taken aback by how rude and unfriendly they were. I was then told entry was koha and when I explained I wasn't aware when I left the main center so didn't have cash, I was guilt tripped to "donate" $5 or $10 via eftpos. I have no problem with a koha and would readily have given it, however I felt like it wasn't koha entry at all. Money was expected and I was glared at when I explained I didn't have any in cash. Also, asking for a $10 donation when entry fee for an adult is $8 was incredible. Once inside, I toured the grounds and had the pleasure of watching and listening to the musicians. I then decided to have a wee snack. Popped into their cafΓ© to be told that that is also cash only and that I would have to choose what I wanted, traipse back to reception to pay and then double back to pick it up. Needless to say, I didn't purchase anything and promptly left, waiting with a few other groups to be picked up and taken back to the center. We had checked at reception about the rides back that were promised and was advised that the cars will wait at the main center and wouldn't drive down unless they had passengers so they couldn't tell us when we could expect a car let alone enough for the 4 groups waiting. Waited for an hour and no one arrived so the groups waiting ended up walking the distance. Whilst normally fine, I have a prior back injury making this a long and difficult walk. By the time I got back, I was incredibly sore and ended up leaving Greytown very disappointed with this experience.

A unique and interesting settler museum with heaps to look at in the replica village. The highlights are the hospital, cottage, and school house set up as they would have been 100 years ago. Would be excellent if you have inquisitive children. It could be improved slightly with some more interactive hands on parts though.

Great labour day weekend event, some cool cars there too. More food facilities would keep people there longer.

We took a group of 17 to Cobblestones this weekend. We were late arriving but Diane stayed open past the usual closing time especially for us and the group enjoyed their visit very much. Fantastic museum and great customer service.
