My 13 year old daughter went to this shop today with 2 of her friends. As she was looking around a staff member approached her and accused her of shop lifting and ask her and her friends to leave the shop. My daughter asked why they thought she had stolen from them and the shop attendant said that 2 of their staff members had seen her stealing when they were coming down the escalator. My daughter was very upset by this stage and asked them to check her bag which they didn't. While she was waiting outside the shop with her friends crying the shop manager came out and said that they had reviewed the security cameras and said that she had not stolen anything and that they were sorry. Sadly, by this stage the damage had been done and my 13 year old daughter came home crying and very upset. To top it all off is that she was the only brown kid amongst them and she asked me why she had been singled out and was it because she was brown. I replied by saying welcome to the world of being brown and yes she was probably right to think this way. I said it's not fair but sadly some people still take colour into consideration and sadly this was her first experience of racial profiling and it wouldn't be the last. Judging people by their colour is not good enough and if you knew my daughter you would know how truly honest and respectful she is of others. She is very caring and supportive of her friends and family and does not associate with dodgy people and never has. I'm just sad that my daughter had to go through this at all this day and age but I guess it's hard to change some people's thinking about subtle racial bias and out right racial profiling of customers. I don't think my daughter will shop there again and they are lucky my wife is the one going down there to talk with them and not me because I'm the Maori father and she is the pakeha mother with a more calm approach when it comes to expressing annoyance.
