Self checkouts are dirty, careless response from staff member when I brought to her attention.
Asked a staff member if she could check stock of garlic, she said no she couldn’t and left it at that.
Unbelievable....

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Easily the best shop in Howick Village & probably the best supermarket in the country. Abundance of fresh locally grown fruit & veg, beef, chicken, bread & honey. Very tidy & clean place. Helpful, friendly staff. 1st class!!!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ On the rare occasion that I shop at Countdown because of convenience, I am usually disappointed. The staff at this store are inattentive and on most occasion abrupt. Yesterday there were 2 staff members looking at a device in the express checkout area and paying no attention to a customer that was trying to get their assistance. Same visit, I asked the deli if they had any pastrami and was told rudely "wait, I'll check". Staff attitude towards customers in this store is poor and needs improvement. Most seem miserable and not interested in anything apart from their pay check at the end of the week.
New World Howick will always be my preference because customer service is something they absolutely excel in, every time!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Came here for the first time to do a regular grocery shop. They were missing several key items. Many items (at least 20) had no visible price tickets or were in the wrong spot - most egregious was no pricing for mince or chicken. There was only a single staff member at the checkouts who stood in the self service section so we had to scan a $300 shop through self checkout. Granted it was 9PM, but received no assistance as we tried to balance everything on the small scale. This place is fine in a pinch, but I would not recommend for regular shopping.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This Countdown is consistently bad. They usually never have certain items I am looking for and it just seems like a run down place that nobody cares about. That is my biggest complaint here - the service which seems to be non existent. Last night there were two people at self service who needed help and the representative was out in the front entrance so I had to politely advise him that there were customers in need of assistance. There was nobody else around, except those who were on checkouts far away. There is just no happiness or smiling, but staff who are simply there for the money.
My advice, forget about this place unless you have no choice and go to Meadowlands or New World Howick instead.
